BUILDING YOUR PORTFOLIO

Your first project doesn’t have to change the world.

A small, finished project can tell a much better story than a big, unfinished idea.

Start with one useful question

Pick a question you can actually answer with the time and tools you have. For an analytics project, that might be: which product categories changed the most over a sample period? A clear question makes it easier to decide what belongs in the project.

Make the decisions visible

A portfolio should help someone understand how you think. Explain why you chose a dataset, what you cleaned, and what you decided not to include. Show the process as well as the final screen.

Finish the smallest useful version

A useful project has a clear result and a readable explanation. It does not need every possible feature. Finish the core question, check your work, and describe the limitations.

Write the story while it’s fresh

Capture the problem, your approach, the result, and what you would change next. Keep screenshots or notebooks alongside the explanation. You will find it much easier to discuss the work later.
